Building a 1000 piece puzzle without losing the table
There is a method, it is not complicated, and it turns a week of frustration into a week of evenings worth looking forward to.
Get it off the table first
A sheet of hardboard an inch larger than the finished size, bought cut to measure, is the single best thing you can do for a 1000 piece build. It slides under a sofa, it survives a dinner, and it ends the negotiation about when the puzzle has to go away.
Two shallow trays or a biscuit tin lid for sorting. Not bowls — you cannot see into a bowl.
Light it from the side
Overhead light bounces off the print and flattens the cut lines. A lamp at desk height off to one side throws a small shadow at every edge, which is what your eye is actually reading when you match two pieces.
This matters most on matte stock like ours and most of all on dark areas.
Sort in two passes
First pass: edges into one tray, everything else face up on the board. Do not try to sort by color yet — you do not know what the colors are until you have seen them all.
Second pass: pull groups out of the field as you notice them. A coastline, a row of windows, a block of one tone. The groups find you rather than the other way round.
The sky problem
Every large puzzle has an area with no information in it, and in most of them it is the sky. Leave it until last, then sort it by cut shape rather than by color — four or five shapes repeat across the whole sheet and the sorting goes faster than it has any right to.
On our pixel maps the equivalent area is open ocean. Same method, same relief when it ends.
Finishing and keeping
Lift a finished three layer puzzle by sliding a second board on top and turning the whole sandwich over. The pieces hold because the layered board clicks rather than slides.
If it is going on a wall, use a puzzle glue on the back rather than the front. The matte print is part of the picture and a glossy sealer flattens it.
Short answers
How long should a 1000 piece puzzle take?
Six to fifteen hours spread over a week is normal. Anyone claiming three hours is either very practiced or counting differently.
What do I do about a missing piece?
Tell us the puzzle and roughly where the gap is. We keep short runs of spares for the current range and will try to post one out.
